Stick slip vibrations in drilling: modeling, estimation, avoidance – Jean Auriol and Florent Di Meglio – April 25th, 2022

In this talk, we present some recent developments for estimating and controlling the torsional motion of a drilling device. We introduce first the stick-slip phenomenology and explain its physical causes. We present a mathematical distributed model that can accurately describe the torsional motion of the drilling device.

Implementing Soft String and Stiff String Models for Torque and Drag Calculations – Darlington Etaje – March 21st, 2022

Soft string and stiff string models are two different mathematical models which are used for torque and drag analysis. They were developed to describe the mechanical behavior of the drill string inside the borehole, and they have their own theoretical background and assumptions.

Coupled Axial-Torsional Modelling – Rajat Dixit – February 28th, 2022

Rajat will present a coupled drillstring model, built within Matlab/Simulink, that can be used to evaluate and optimize drilling and tripping operations. The model will be released through OSDC via the MIT license in early March.
